Non - profit organisations (Onlus)
Non - profit organisations (Onlus)
Hello everyone and welcome back to the STG Library! In the first (and for now, last) article published, I mentioned the term "Onlus" while talking about Save The Green. Today, I'm here to explain what it means, its etymology, and the history behind this term.
So, let's start with the meaning of this word. ONLUS (Non-Profit Organizations of Social Utility) are associations that commit to pursuing ideals for social solidarity in various fields: social and healthcare assistance, charity, protection and promotion of artistic heritage, protection and promotion of the environment and environmental heritage, scientific research.
In simpler terms, ONLUS are benevolent associations that engage in promoting ideals and taking actions in different areas, without aiming for profit, unlike a company or a store, for example.
As for the etymology of the word, there isn't much to say, as it is an acronym, standing for Non-Profit Organizations of Social Utility, the initials of which form the word "Onlus."
Regarding the history, there's a lot to say, and I'll try to be as comprehensive as possible without risking boring you or confusing you further.
These types of associations emerged in the second half of the 19th century, mainly in states with higher economic development. They were largely established to carry out solidarity activities, improve economic and social conditions, and benefited from the spread of mass media, which facilitated the dissemination of their ideals.
Various governments began to create laws and tax benefits for these associations, eventually coining the term "Non-profit."
Throughout history, many of these associations were established, and among them, some remain highly significant today, such as WWF in our field. Others, in different areas, include organizations like Save The Children or UNICEF.
That's all for today. I hope I've resolved your doubts and satisfied some of your curiosity. See you soon on STG City!
